When the child is beginning the process of acquiring an AAC device, it's often a collaborative effort between the evaluating SLP and the treating SLP. This partnership is essential for demonstrating the child's need for AAC and ensuring successful funding through insurance.

What is a trial period?

A trial period is a short-term use of an AAC device to determine whether it supports the child's communication needs. Most funding sources (especially insurance providers) require this trial to demonstrate the medical necessity of a permanent device.

Evaluating SLP Role:

Evaluating SLP Role:

  • Conducts AAC evaluation and selects trial device
  • Coordinates setup and provides training/support
  • Collects clinical feedback (addendum) from treating SLP
  • Completes and submits funding paperwork to insurance

Treating SLP Role

Collaboration is key!

Evaluating SLP Role:

  • Incorporates the trial device into therapy sessions
  • observes and documents how the child uses the device
  • Completes a post-trial summary (addendum) describing the child's benefit and use

Post-Trial Addendum

At the end of the trial period, the treating SLP is asked to provide a brief summary describing how the child used the AAC system in therapy. This input is essential and helps the evaluating SLP complete the final funding report.
