Types of AAC

Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) encompasses a wide range of tools and strategies designed to assist individuals with complex communication needs. These options can empower users to express themselves, connect with others, and navigate their daily lives more effectively. The types of AAC systems:

Unaided ACC

Unaided AAC relies on the user’s body to communicate. No external tools are needed for these methods, which can include:

  • Sign Language: A visual-manual language with gestures and hand signs.
  • Gestures and Facial Expressions: Non-verbal cues, such as waving or pointing, that convey messages.
  • Body Language: Posture and movements used to express thoughts and emotions.

Unaided communication works best when the user and their communication partners are familiar with the chosen methods.

Aided ACC

Aided AAC requires tools or devices to assist communication. These tools vary in complexity, from simple to high-tech options:

Light-Tech AAC:

  • Communication Boards and Books: Users point to or select pictures, words, or symbols to express their needs.
  • PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System): A structured approach where users exchange picture cards to communicate.

Mid-Tech AAC:

  • Battery-operated devices with pre-recorded messages or simple output functions.
  • Examples include single-message communicators and speech-generating devices with limited functions.

High-Tech AAC:

  • Advanced speech-generating devices (SGDs) that offer dynamic displays, text-to-speech capabilities, and customizable vocabulary.
  • These devices often include tablets or dedicated systems with specialized AAC software.
